Who are you thinking about right now?

We must take the time to spend time with God, even if it means doing fewer things for God.

December 31

Then those who feared the LORD spoke to one another, and the LORD listened and heard them; so a book of remembrance was written before Him for those who fear the LORD and who meditate on His name.

Who are you thinking about right now?

Every time we think about God, He knows it and it pleases Him so much that He has it written down in a book of remembrance. That is an incredible thought, both terrifying and wonderful. It is terrifying because I know some of the thoughts that pass through my head. They make me sick! What must they do to God? This truth that God knows my thoughts makes me desire to ”renew my mind” as Romans 12:2 tells us to with greater passion.

But it is also a wonderful thing that God loves it when my thoughts are on Him. We all know how it makes us feel when someone says to us ‘I was thinking of you’. It usually brings us joy. Let’s not forget that we were created in God’s image. Many of the things that bring us joy are the same things that bring Him joy. He is a person after all, not an entity without feelings.

This can also be a very convicting verse. How often do I think about God during the day? Do I only think about Him when I need something from Him? And when I do think about Him, what am I thinking?

This is especially true in this day when the world has conspired to fill every waking moment with something that is not of God. But even the things of God can be used to prevent us from thinking about Him. It is a very common trap people fall into, getting so busy doing things for God that they forget to spend time with God.

As we get involved in some work for the Lord, the enemy will use various devices to try to knock us out of the game. A pastor friend of mine is fond of saying: “If the Devil can’t get you to take your foot off of the gas, he will get you to push it all the way to the floor.” He will cause you to get so busy doing things for God that you stop doing them with God.

As we think about God, it is His chance to speak to us and to help us in whatever work He has set before us. We must take the time to spend time with God, even if it means doing fewer things for God. Years ago, I heard a comment on this verse that I have adopted as my own: “If there is an angel in heaven writing down every time I think about God, then I am going to try to give that angel writer’s cramp”. Jesus, help us to think about You more and more every day. Help us to put our time with You higher in our priorities than anything else in our day. Help us to have ‘the mind of Christ’.
