Trusting God with your mistakes!

Our mistakes should bother us because they are against God not because it costs us money, time, prestige, or position.

Amaziah asked the man of God, "But what should I do about the silver I paid to hire the army of Israel?" The man of God replied, "The LORD is able to give you much more than this!"

Trusting God with your mistakes!

King Amaziah of Judah was a king that was pleasing to the Lord for most of his life.  He usually did what he was supposed to do.  In our reading for today we saw that Amaziah built up a large army.  Amaziah also used a large amount of silver to hire troops from the nation of Israel.  An unnamed man of God comes to Amaziah and tells him that God is not pleased with him hiring the troops from Israel and that if they stay in his army that God will defeat Amaziah every time he goes into battle.  The only solution is to send the troops from Israel back to their homes.

In our verse today Amaziah asks a practical question that many of us would probably ask, ‘What about the silver that I paid for those troops?’  It had been a mistake on Amaziah’s part to hire those troops and sadly it doesn’t look like that bothers him as much as the fact that he is going to be out all of the silver that he paid.  To his credit Amaziah did send the troops home.

The man of God told Amaziah not to worry about the silver because God is able to give him much more silver than he spent on those troops.  As we go through this life we will make mistakes in our relationship with God.  Nothing that we do is ever going to prevent that.  How we respond is absolutely critical.  Our mistakes should bother us because they are against God not because it costs us money, time, prestige, or position.  When we are concerned about those things it shows that we don’t fully trust God.  If we did, we would be concerned about how our mistakes affect our relationship with God.  We would know that God is fully able to give back to us anything we have lost or wasted; in fact, He can give us a lot more.

This lack of faith is something that will also prevent us from dealing with our mistakes the way we should.  When we make a mistake, we should respond immediately.  Too often we allow fear to prevent us from doing the right thing when a mistake is discovered in our lives.  The fear is that we will lose something that we can’t get back; that is a lack of faith.

God is able to give us anything and everything and He is more interested in our immediate obedience than in what will be wasted.  There is no waste in the life of a person that is obedient to God.  This begins with humility; we must believe that God’s interests in our life are more important than our own.  Then we must believe and trust God for everything.  There is no mistake in our lives that God can’t redeem and bring good out of.  Jesus, teach us to trust You and Your ability to bring good even out of our mistakes.
