Waiting for a God who can…!

The psalmist in our reading for today started this psalm by asking a rhetorical question; ‘Where does my help come from?’  And then here in our verse for the day he answers his own question.  This psalmist knew where his help was coming from and he knew something about the ability of that helper.

First, the source of his help was the Lord.  Knowing the source of where your help is going to come from will give you a sense of comfort and peace.  Too often people are looking to things and people other than the Lord for their help.  Our help comes from the Lord.  He might use some of these other things or people, but the help is still coming from Him.

This requires faith!  To believe that God is the source of our help is a step of faith.  It means that we may not be able to see how the help is going to come to us and we may not understand how God is going to help us.  But by faith, we must believe that He is the source of our help and we must wait for Him to act.  But as we wait, we must also be listening for the leading of the Holy Spirit in case there is a step that God is asking us to take before He helps us.

This is the part a lot of people miss.  They believe that God is the source of their help and they believe God will help them.  What they are not doing are the things that God wants them to do first.  God will often require a step of faith before His helping hand reaches out.  We need to be listening for our part, and in faith and obedience do it so that we can see God’s part.

Second, the psalmist knew something about the source of his help.  He knew that the Lord had made the heavens and the earth.  The psalmist knew that the Lord, the source of his help was powerful enough to create everything that we see.  This brings with it great confidence as we wait.  If God is great enough and powerful enough to create the heavens and the earth, then He is great and powerful enough to help me.

As we wait for the Lord to help us, we can do so in comfort and confidence.  We are at peace because we know that the Creator of everything, including us, is able to help us.  This should bring peace even during the greatest of trials and tribulations; our help comes from the Lord.  Have faith that the great God who created the universe and everything in it is the source of your help and look for what it is that He might be asking you to do before He helps you.  Sometimes it is just to wait and believe.  Jesus, help us to believe that You are the source and power of our help.
